RSS or Email? Choosing the Best Tool for Your Marketing Campaign

Subscribers are automatically kept up to date on any changes you’ve made to your website, a task that would drive people crazy and would surely get you flagged as spam if the updates came as a constant barrage of emails.

In the same way that newsletters have their pros and cons, so do RSS feeds. Despite the risk of getting blocked as spam, when sending out emails you are more or less in control of who gets what information and when. RSS feeds places the control in the hands of the reader, and pro-activity can be as much a curse as a blessing. People can be lazy and forgetful, so unless your content is extremely compelling and memorable, there’s a good chance your information will never get read. An RSS subscription means nothing if people don’t choose to read the feeds.

Once your newsletter has impressed a reader, there’s a chance they’ll subscribe and will most likely visit your website. If they are impressed by your website, there’s a chance they’ll subscribe to your RSS feed. So while both have their pros and cons, when used effectively, they can work together to create a loyal, ever-increasing foundation of interested visitors. And the more people you have in your store, the better your chances of making a sale.
